Greene County is located in Southeast Mississippi along the Mississippi-Alabama border. It is bound by Wayne County on the north, Washington County, Alabama, on the northeast, Mobile County, Alabama, on the Southeast, George County on the south, and Perry County on the west. Its county seat is Leakesville.
Greene County was named after Nathanael Greene, a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. Greene County was the first of two counties established by an act of December 9, 1811. It was carved from the southeastern part of Wayne County. Although the name is spelled “Greene” in the establishing act, it was spelled “Green” in earlier acts. At one time, Greene County was part of the Choctaw Indian Nation. Through a series of treaties, it became part of the Mississippi Territory and was opened for settlement in the early 1800's.

Greene County is one of the smallest counties in Mississippi. Towns in Greene County include Leakesville, McClain, and State Line (which is partly in Wayne County).
