Lamar County Probate

Lamar County is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Metropolitan Statistical Area and is one of the fastest-growing counties in Mississippi. Lamar County has the fifth highest per capita income in the State of Mississippi.

Lamar County is named after Mississippi statesman Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, who served as a United States Representative and Senator, as well as United States Secretary of the Interior in the first administration of President Grover Cleveland. He is also the only Mississippian to date to serve as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Lamar County is part of the 10th Chancery Court District, along with Forrest County, Marion County, Pearl River County, and Perry County. Chancellors in the Tenth Judicial District are Chancery Court Judges Sebe Dale, Jr., Johnny L. Williams, and James H.C. Thomas, Jr. The Chancery Clerk for Lamar County is:

Wayne Smith
P.O. Box 247
Purvis, MS 39475
Phone: 601-794-8504
Fax: 601-794-3903

Lamar County is bound by Covington County on the north, Forrest County on the east, Pearl River County on the south, Marion County on the West, and Jefferson Davis County to the northwest. Cities located in Lamar County include Hattiesburg (which is mostly in Lamar County), Lumberton (which is partly in Pearl River County), and Purvis, which is the county seat. The town of Sumrall is also located in Lamar County.

Like other Mississippi counties, Lamar County follows Mississippi Uniform Chancery Court Rule 6.1, which requires every fiduciary (such as an executor or administrator) to be represented by a Mississippi attorney unless such fiduciary is an attorney. Because the administration of Mississippi estates can be complex, involves fiduciary duties, and presents the potential for mismanagement and/or abuse, this rule serves the public benefit by ensuring that those acting on behalf of a Mississippi estate are represented by a Mississippi probate attorney who understands the probate procedures and rules. In order to effectively and efficiently guide you through a Mississippi probate proceeding, the estate attorney must have a good understanding of Mississippi probate and federal tax laws. If you need help with a probate matter, contact a Mississippi attorney that is experienced in probate and estate administration to ensure that the most effective administration of the estate.
