Perry County is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bound on the northeast by Wayne County, on the east by Greene County, on the south by Stone County, on the west by Forrest County, and on the northwest by Jones County. It has an area of twenty-six townships, or 936 square miles.

Perry County was named after Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero from the War of 1812. Perry County was settled by early pioneers along its many waterways. It is located in the southeastern part of the State of Mississippi inside was it known as the long-leaf pine belt. During the early years of the settlement of the county, the Leaf River was the primary mode of transportation of logs and other supplies to the Mississippi Gulf Coast area.

Perry County is part of the 10th Chancery Court District, along with Forrest County, Marion County, Pearl River County, and Lamar County. Chancellors in the Tenth Judicial District are Chancery Court Judges Sebe Dale, Jr., Johnny L. Williams, and James H.C. Thomas, Jr. The Chancery Court Clerk is:

Beaumont, New Augusta, and Richton are all located in Perry County, Mississippi. New Augusta is the county seat. Until 1906 the county seat was the old town of Augusta, near the center of the county on the east bank of the Leaf River. Old Augusta remains a small village today.

Like other Mississippi counties, Perry County follows Mississippi Uniform Chancery Court Rule 6.1, which requires every fiduciary (such as an executor or administrator) to be represented by a Mississippi attorney unless such fiduciary is an attorney.
